Where others fall

The year is 2047. In the barren wasteland that was once New York City, there lay nothing more than devastated buildings. Fifteen years ago this city and many others were heading towards a brand new revolution. One that would change the world. Five years later, however, a mysterious event occurred, wiping humanity to the brink of extinction for a full decade.
Then, it suddenly stopped. All the work leading towards the revolution gone, entire cities laid to waste, and the government laid in pieces. Deep within Old York, a figure looked around. "there has to be some evidence here." said the figure. As she continued to search, a building lost yet another piece of itself. But the sudden falling wasn't what startled her, it was instead the sound of approaching footsteps. Hiding behind a pile of rocks, she drew her gun, ready to fire if need be.

The world had a lot of potential. The human race in mere decades seemed on the verge of the newest revolution. Even animals were evolving into better forms.
That is, until a mysterious event occurred. The human race suddenly began to decline in population, animals disappeared, and important resources vanished. For an entire decade, it seemed like the human race went from being the most advanced to suddenly being on the verge of extinction. But just as quickly as it began, it abruptly ended. Why did it happen? What caused it? And why did it just suddenly stop?

And how far will a group of five go to find the truth?
